Protecting the Ocean’s Most Important Places: Progress towards protecting 10% of the ocean by 2020 and what comes next?
The global community has enshrined targets for area-based conservation in the ocean, namely through Aichi Biodiversity Target 11 under the CBD and Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14.5, both maturing in 2020. These targets have catalyzed enormous political commitment, public awareness and action at multiple levels, resulting in important progress in the past few years, but gaps remain for their full achievement by 2020.

Meanwhile, emerging science is telling us that greater ambition and action are needed in the next decade if we are to safeguard global biodiversity and ensure that the ocean can continue to support us.

We have a major opportunity ahead to enshrine a new global target that can live up to the ambition needed to ensure a healthy and productive ocean: the adoption of the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework that the 15th Conference of the Parties of CBD is set to agree upon in 2021.

Co-organized by the Friends of Ocean Action and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, this webinar aims to provide an update on progress towards achieving the 10% target of SDG 14.5, and stimulate a discussion on ambition for a new global target for ocean protection to 2030. It will also provide an opportunity to discuss the issue of area-based conservation and how to ensure that the ocean remains high on the global agenda and is recognized as essential for a more resilient future for the planet and people.

We are delighted to be joined by the following speakers:
- Elizabeth Mrema, Executive Secretary, CBD Secretariat
- Peter Thomson, UN Special Envoy for the Ocean
- John Tayleur, Head of Programme, UNEP WCMC
- Sarat Babu Gidda, Senior Programme Management Officer, CBD
- Alexander Shestakov, Head of the Division of Science, Society and Sustainable Future, CBD

With a video address by Bernadette Jordan, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard of Canada.

All are welcome to join this webinar – feel free to share this invitation.
